After infection with AIDS it may take months or years for symptoms to appear, if they appear at all. Symptoms to take note of include:
• Fatigue: Watch for extreme tiredness and a low energy level that may drag on for months and cannot be attributed to increased physical activity, or drug/alcohol abuse.
• Loss of Appetite: Watch for a loss of appetite over an extended period of time.
• Weight loss: Watch for a weight loss of 10 to 15 pounds over a two to three month period not effected by a change in diet or effort to lose weight.
• Swollen lymph glands: Watch for swelling of these glands in the groin area, underarms and neck that lasts for a prolonged period of time with no other reason.
• Diarrhea: Watch for periods of consistant and unexplained diarrhea or bloody stools.
• Fever: Watch for fevers lasting up to several months without cause. These fevers may shoot up on occaision and result in shaking chills and nightsweats,or they may just remain persistent low-grade fevers.
• Nightsweats: Watch for nightsweats which are characterized by waking up at night with the sheets and your bedclothes drenched with sweat.
• Persistant Colds or Flus: Watch for cold or flu symptoms that last for periods of a month or more. They may appear to get better for a short period of time and then reoccur.
• Rashes and skin problems: Watch for rashes or other skin erruptions, including unusual bruising, that appear and may disappear and reoccur again later.
• Whitish spots or unusual blemishes in the mouth: Your Dentist may be the first to notice these. They may indicate "Thrush", a yeast-like, fungal infection and result in soreness or difficulty in swallowing.
• Cough: Watch for a persistent, dry cough which lasts over a period of time and cannot be attributed to smoking, a cold, or flu.
• Bleeding: Watch for unexplained bleeding from any orafice.
As these symptoms are also symptomatic of a variety of other illnesses, one should seek the advice of a competent, licensed, AIDS-informed physician if one or more of these symptoms persists!
